Georgian Interior Ministry confirms 6 killed by collapsed rock at Mindeli coal mine

TBILISI. April 5 (Interfax) - Six miners have been killed in an accident at the Mindeli coal mine in Tkibuli in Georgia's Imereti region, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

Georgian trade unions representative Tengiz Dolaberidze told reporters earlier that there was information about six miners killed by collapsed rock, but it was still too early to speak about that before rescue efforts were over.

According to the Interior Ministry, the accident occurred early on Thursday morning.

"The preliminary information available indicates that walls in one of the mine's tunnel deformed, causing the tunnel roof to collapse," it said.

Several people were admitted to hospitals with injuries, it said.

When commenting on the six workers killed in the accident, the Interior Ministry said that they sustained fatal injuries and could not be saved.
