Some 1,500 taking part in unauthorized opposition rally in central Moscow

MOSCOW. May 5 (Interfax) - Some 1,500 people are taking part in the unauthorized opposition rally in the center of Moscow, a Moscow police spokesperson told Interfax.

"An unauthorized public event taking place in the center of Moscow involves about 1,500 people," the spokesperson said.

"Police and National Guard officers are maintaining public order and taking measures to prevent wrongdoing and arrest wrongdoers to be brought to account in accordance with the law," he said.

Meanwhile, the event's organizers said that more than 140 people had been arrested at the rally. "What we know is that over 140 people have been held, most of them in Pushkinskaya Square," a source said.
