Moscow hopes Iraq forms capable government after parliamentary elections
MOSCOW. May 14 (Interfax) - Holding successful parliamentary elections in Iraq is an important event on the path towards domestic stabilization, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
"Moscow is seeing the organizing in due course of the elections to the Iraqi Council of Representatives - the first since the Iraqi territories captured by ISIL terrorists were freed - as an important milestone towards domestic stabilization and the strengthening of the country's democratic institutions," the ministry said in a comment posted on its website.
"We are ready to continue to provide efficient support to friendly Iraq in combatting international terrorism and make a tangible contribution to further advancement of the Russian-Iraqi wide-ranging cooperation," the ministry said.
"Respecting the sovereign choice of the Iraqi people, we express our hope that Iraq will soon form a new representative, capable government which will demonstrate the readiness of the country's responsible political forces and ethno-religious groups to act in concert and abandon narrow ambitions for the sake of attaining national goals," the ministry said.
The ministry also noted the role of the Kurdish autonomous region's leaders in ensuring popular vote.
