Magnit mulls online sales based on pharmacies

MOSCOW. June 8 (Interfax) - Magnit , Russia's second largest retailer might launch online sales based on pharmacies if it has its own distribution platform.

"We need to think about this as a supplement to our offline business," Magnit executive director Olga Naumova said in a conference call on Thursday.

The specifics of logistics in the pharmaceutical business differ from food retail, but are similar to the specifics of logistics in e-commerce, Magnit CEO Khachatur Pombukhchan said.

With its own pharmaceutical distributor, Magnit would acquire expertise for the development of an omni-channel sales model, he said.

Magnit now has 51 pharmacies. The retail has plans to replace pharmacies operating at 6,000 of its convenience stores and hypermarkets with its own, and integrate pharmacies into all of its Magnit Cosmetic drugstores.
