Protesters clashing with police near Verkhovna Rada HQ in Kyiv

KYIV. June 19 (Interfax) - Up to 2,000 representatives of veteran organizations and miners are participating in a rally on Constitution Square near the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada headquarters in the center of Kyiv, demanding that their benefits be preserved.

Demonstrators have knocked down security fences, moving closer toward the parliamentary building, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Several hundred demonstrators are currently standing near the entrance to the parliamentary headquarters.

According to police reports, no one has yet been detained. Police are trying to prevent any unlawful actions.

Skirmishes are under way between demonstrators and police officers on the steps leading to the parliamentary building, the Interfax correspondent said. Police are using riot control devices, while protesters are hurling bottles at policemen.
