Russia maintained leadership in global wheat exports last agricultural season - Grain Union

KUMERTAU (Bashkortostan) - Russia maintained its leadership in global wheat exports in the previous agricultural season (July 2017-June 2018), the Russian Grain Union said in materials presented at a grain conference in Kumertau on Wednesday.

The Union estimates that wheat exports totaled 40.8 million tonnes. Total grain shipments abroad were 54.4 million tonnes.

Union experts believe that grain exports will be over 50 million tonnes in the coming years but that this figure is only possible with increased investment in agricultural technology and grain market infrastructure as well as state support for exports, they said.

The Grain Union expects grain exports to be lower in this agricultural season at 40 million tonnes due to reduced demand for grain.

The Agriculture Ministry said that Russia exported 52.4 million tonnes of grain in the last agricultural season including 40.2 million tonnes of wheat.
