Yaroslavl prison worker said to have argued with beaten convict Makarov arrested

YAROSLAVL. Aug 2 (Interfax) - Yaroslavl's Zavolzhsky District Court arrested junior warden of the security department of Penal Colony No. 1 Alexander Morozov on Thursday.

"The court ruled to grant the investigation's motion and arrest Morozov until September 20," the judge said.

In court, investigators said that Yevgeny Makarov has had an argument with Morozov before the convict was beaten.

Morozov declined to testify.

He became the 11th defendant arrested in the criminal case over the beating of Makarov. Deputy warden Ivan Kalashnikov was placed under house arrest.

Immediately after the court session, Morozov told his lawyer, Galina Surova, that he wanted to appeal the ruling.

The defense team has not decided on further steps, Surova told reporters.

Lawyer Yakov Iontsev has appealed Kalashnikov's house arrest, court spokeswoman Anastasia Averkiyeva told reporters. He is insisting on a tougher penalty.

On July 20, Novaya Gazeta published a video showing 18 penitentiary employees beating Makarov with fists and batons. The incident occurred in June 2017. The report caused a public outcry. The central office of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on charges of abuse of office involving violence.
