Inmate Makarov's defense drops demand for Yaroslavl Penal Colony No. 1 deputy head's arrest
YAROSLAVL. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The defense team of inmate Yevgeny Makarov has withdrawn its appeal of the restrictive measure imposed on the deputy head of Yaroslavl's Penal Colony No.1, Ivan Kalashnikov, who is currently under house arrest.
"Having read the documents, we decided to withdraw our appeal against Ivan Kalashnikov's house arrest. Indeed, a recently diagnosed illness prevents his placement in a pretrial detention facility. We were unaware of this before, as the hearing was held in camera. We also have no right to mention what this illness is," lawyer Irina Biryukova wrote on Facebook.
Makarov's defense team is planning to "ensure that Kalashnikov is given a fair punishment commensurate with his actions," she wrote.
On July 20, Novaya Gazeta published a video in which 18 prison workers in Yaroslavl tortured a handcuffed inmate, identified as Yevgeny Makarov. The incident occurred on June 29, 2017. The report caused a public outcry. The Investigative Committee's central office is handling the case, which was opened on charges of abuse of office with the use of violence.
A total of 11 people have been arrested. Kalashnikov was placed under house arrest.
The Yaroslavl Region Court has considered four appeals concerning the arrest of the prison workers.
