Tajikistan closes Kokul checkpoint on Afghan border
MOSCOW. Aug 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Tajikistan has temporarily closed the Kokul checkpoint on the border with Afghanistan, as the situation in Afghan territory adjacent to the border has become complicated, Muhammad Ulugkhodzhayev, the spokesperson for the Tajik National Security Committee's Border Forces, told Interfax on Wednesday.
The Tajik Border Forces are in full control of the border and are monitoring the situation in the border zone, he said.
Abdul Khalil Asir, a spokesperson for the police department of the Afghan province of Takhar, told journalists on Monday that militants had attacked the Afghan river port of Ai-Khanoum across from the Kokul checkpoint. Reinforcements arrived and helped repel the attack.
