Nizhny Novgorod scientists develop unmanned fish robot for army

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Nizhny Novgorod region presented the biomorphic submarine Tunets-1 at the international military-technical forum ARMY 2018.

The innovative project was developed by scientists from Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University, the press service for the region's government said on Friday.

"The vessel copies a fish, it does not cause any stirring of the external environment during its operation, and therefore this robot is virtually impossible to detect. This means that the Tunets can work underwater, fully merging with underwater diversity. Besides, it will be equipped with underwater hydroacoustic communication systems, which will make it possible to unite such robots into networks, stocks, units interacting with each other under the command of one remote center," the press release said.

Avgust Li, deputy pro-rector for research work at Nizhny Novgorod State University, said the development has several advantages over the existing probes and robots.

"Above all, the vessel Tunets is characterized by its biomorphic structure, its innovative magnetic engine, the possibility of group command and the presence of command electromagnetic communications, that is, the Nizhny Novgorod biomorphic vessel is unique," the researcher said.

The display of the Nizhny Novgorod region was one of the biggest at ARMY 2018, the press service said. The forum was attended by 45 of the region's enterprises, which presented some 200 advanced developments.
