Education minister: 1.8 mln children to go to school for first time on Sept 1

GORKI. Aug 29 (Interfax) - A total of 1.8 million children will go to school for the first time in 2018, Russian Education Minister Olga Vasilyeva said.

"There will be 1.8 million first-graders. The total number of students in school will be 15.6 million," Vasilyeva said at a teleconference on the start of the school year in Gorki in the Moscow region on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said that 67 new schools will open their doors on September 1 and another 119 will be put into operation before the end of the calendar year.

A total of 10.5 million children are receiving additional education in Russia, and this figure is increasing, Vasilyeva said.

"Additional education is growing stronger and developing. A total of 10.5 million of our children are now receiving additional education," she said.

This figure increases every year, she said.
