Russian, Iranian speakers discuss parliamentary dimension of bilateral cooperation

VOLGOGRAD. Sept 6 (Interfax) - The relationship between Russia and Iran is developing dynamically, Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said at a meeting with Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) Chairman Ali Larijani in Volgograd.

"Relations between our countries are developing dynamically. This happens in large part due to dynamism in relations between our presidents," Volodin said on Thursday.

"It is important to do everything possible within the parliamentary dimension framework to legislatively support the implementation of decisions adopted at the top level and certainly discuss matters that we can resolve together and, in particular, broaden cooperation between regional companies," he said.

In addition to Moscow, an Iranian parliamentary delegation has also visited St. Petersburg, Sochi and now Volgograd, Volodin said.

Larijani proposed appointing people responsible for maintaining permanent contacts between the Duma and the Majlis, and Volodin supported this proposal. Duma Deputy Chairman Sergei Neverov was designated as such a person on the Duma's part.

Volodin and Larijani also discussed preparations for the third Eurasian conference to be held in October 2018.

The Duma press service had said earlier that the Russian-Iranian commission would meet in Volgograd considering the potential of cooperation between the two countries in the Caspian region.

Volgograd is also to host the first meeting of a commission on cooperation between the Duma and the Majlis on Thursday.

The commission, set up based on a decision made during a visit to Iran by a Duma delegation led by Volodin on April 9, 2018, is intended to promote broader and deeper bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran.

The commission's rules of procedure envision regular parliamentary consultations on matters of mutual interest, including in the energy, transport, industry, science, education, exchange of technology, tourism, and security sectors.

The Duma commission includes Deputy Chairman Sergei Neverov, Foreign Affairs Committee head Leonid Slutsky, Financial Market Committee head Anatoly Aksakov, Energy Committee head Pavel Zavalny, Transport and Construction Committee head Yevgeny Moskvichyov, Agriculture Committee head Vladimir Kashin, Economic Policy, Industry, Innovative Development and Entrepreneurship Committee head Sergei Zhigarev, and coordinator of the parliamentary group on relations with the Iranian parliament Gennady Sklyar.
