Russian delegation to attend ex-UN sec gen Kofi Annan's funeral in Ghana
MOSCOW. Sept 11 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that it is sending its delegation to Ghana to attend a funeral ceremony of the former UN secretary general and the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kofi Annan, which is scheduled to take place in the Ghani capital Accra on September 11-13.
"We are sharing the sorrow of the Ghani government and people in connection with the passing away of one of the most important politicians and the most prominent African diplomats, who dedicated his life to the protection of peace and assistance to the settlement of conflicts," the statement reads.
Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia and special envoy to the African Union Vsevolod Tkachenko will lead the Russian delegation at the funeral ceremony, the Foreign Ministry said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have earlier offered their condolences to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres over Annan's demise.
