Energy facilities in northwestern Russia vulnerable for terrorists - Patrushev

NARYAN-MAR. Sept 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Violations of counter-terrorism protection requirements have been uncovered at several energy facilities in the Northwestern Federal District, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said.

"Violations of mandatory requirements to ensure counter-terrorism protection were detected at the facilities of Gazprom Energy Holding, Yantarenergo, Lenenergo, Inter RAO, FSK EES, which are located in the district," Patrushev said at a joint meeting with Russian Special Presidential Envoy to the Northwestern Federal District Alexander Beglov.

He called for tightening the oversight of enforcing the laws on counteraction to terrorism and security of energy facilities. This also concerns transport infrastructure facilities and mass venues, the Russian Security Council secretary said.

About 14,000 violations, which are related to anti-terrorism protection of facilities where a lot of people are staying, have been uncovered in the district, Patrushev said.

The certification of facilities, which are subject to mandatory protection by the Russian National Guard in the Vologda, Leningrad, Arkhangelsk and Kaliningrad Regions, in the Republic of Komi and in St. Petersburg, is not complete.
