Suspect in journalist's murder in Astana detained - Kazakh Interior Ministry

ASTANA. Sept 28 (Interfax) - Police have detained a man accused of involvement in the murder of Nur.kz online news portal journalist Irina Beketova, the director of the Kazakh Interior Ministry's state language and information department, Almas Sadubayev, said on Friday.

"Officers of the Interior Ministry's criminal police department detained A. M. Guseinov in an abandoned building on the bank of the Yesil River in the village of Izhevskoye in the Arshaly district of the Akmola region and placed him in a detention center. Acting out of jealousy, he killed Nur.kz journalist I.D. Beketova, whose dead body with traces of beating was found in the lobby of her apartment building," Sadubayev said.

"The detention operation was very brief. He did not offer any resistance. He did not try to escape. Policemen caught him off guard. A pre-trial inquiry is ongoing," he said.

The suspect and the victim had an argument caused by jealousy, the press service of Astana's interior affairs department said earlier. On Monday, neighbors found Beketova unconscious and injured in her apartment building and called an ambulance. The woman died.
