ASEM leaders support JCPOA, believe its functionality needs to be confirmed - source in Russian delegation

BRUSSELS. Oct 19 (Interfax) - The ASEM member states generally support the preservation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program, a source in the Russian delegation said.

"A number of key principles regarding Iran will be reaffirmed [in the final statement of the ASEM summit chairman]. Iran is the top item on the agenda. The main message is that this plan of action should be preserved, and its functionality should be confirmed," the source told the press in comments on the discussion of the final document.

The leaders of ASEM member states will discuss the provisions of this document and are expected to voice support for it at the forum.

According to the source, preserving the JCPOA would promote respect for legal regimes and international agreements.

The document might also address the economic aspects of the issue, the source said.
