Shipyard to be built at Russian Navy's logistics center in Tartus - newspaper

MOSCOW. Dec 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian ministries of defense and of industry and trade are working on the project of a shipyard in Surya's Tartus, Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov told the Kommersant newspaper on Monday.

"The project is being developed, and a field party is visiting the location," Ivanov said.

"There are plans to build ground infrastructure and to deploy machine tools," he added.

The Russian Navy has its technical support and logistics center in Tartus.

The agreement with Syria allows the Russian Navy to simultaneously station up to 11 ships, including nuclear-powered ones, in Tartus. The Tartus center is being used by the Russian Navy's task force permanently deployed in the Mediterranean.
