Ecological Party established in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT. Jan 9 (Interfax) - The newly-founded Ecological Party of Uzbekistan has held a foundation conference in Tashkent, a spokesperson for the party's organizational committee told Interfax.

"Taking part in the foundation conference were 250 delegates from all regions of Uzbekistan," he said.

The party has been set up on the basis of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan that has existed since 2008, he said.

Boriy Alikhonov, a deputy speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (the lower chamber of the Uzbek parliament) and chairman of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan, had said at a meeting of the Ecological Party's lead group in November 2018 that "the establishment of a political party advocating environmental protection in this country is an imperative of our time."
