Peskov says U.S.' sanctions against Deripaska's companies illegal, declines to comment on their lifting

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has declined to comment on the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to lift the sanctions against En+, Rusal, and Eurosibenergo but said that any restrictions are unlawful.

"I will not give you an opinion. We're still not commenting. But you are aware of our attitude to sanctions in general: we believe they are illegal from the angle of international law. As for this particular case, I will abstain from comment," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the press on Monday.

Journalists asked him to comment on the decision of the U.S. Treasury Department to lift the sanctions against three companies whose major shareholder is Oleg Deripaska. The sanctions imposed on Deripaska himself remain in place.

Peskov also declined to comment on the new composition of the En+ board of directors. "This is not something for the Kremlin to assess; it's a corporate affair. So here, too, is not the place for us to comment," he said.
