Armenian sappers, medics arrive in Syria with Russia's support - Defense Ministry
YEREVAN. Feb 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Eighty-three Armenian specialists arrived in Syria on Friday to give specialized humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people, Armenian Defense Ministry press secretary Artsrun Hovhannisyan said.
"The team, which comprises 83 humanitarian demining and security specialists and medical professionals, came to the city of Aleppo in the Syrian Arab Republic today to give specialized humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people," Hovhannisyan said.
"The Armenian specialists will perform humanitarian demining, raise mine awareness of the population, and provide medical aid in Aleppo; they will be operating exclusively outside the combat zone," Hovhannisyan wrote on Facebook.
Armenia has decided to give specialized humanitarian assistance to the Syrian population due to the severe humanitarian situation in Syria, especially in Aleppo, UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 2017 and 2018, written requests of Syria, and the existence of a large Armenian community in Aleppo, he said.
"The presence of Armenian specialists in the Syrian Arab Republic, their status, activity, and security are regulated by Armenia's laws. Russia has helped transport the Armenian specialists to Syria and provided logistic support," Hovhannisyan said.
