Poroshenko decides to resume operation of Mariupol airport
KYIV. March 1 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko instructed the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff, Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan and Head of Donetsk Regional Military and Civil Administration Oleksandr Kuts to revive the operations of Mariupol airport.
"There is one more idea that I got today and that I will firmly deal with. Today I am instructing the Chief of the General Staff, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Infrastructure and the head of the regional state administration to consider the issue of launching Mariupol airport," Poroshenko said at a Friday meeting of the Regional Development Council of Donetsk region in Mariupol.
Mariupol airport had to be closed down due to the hostilities in Donbas. In April 2016, the military liberated the airport building and in May the airport was supposed to open for passengers. But for safety reasons flights to Mariupol have not resumed yet.
The government bodies of the part of Donetsk region controlled by Kyiv are located in Mariupol.
