Ex-RZD chief Yakunin wins lawsuit against Novaya Gazeta

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) - Moscow's Basmanny District Court has ordered the newspaper Novaya Gazeta to pay former Russian Railways (RZD) chief Vladimir Yakunin 40,000 rubles in a defamation lawsuit.

"The court has partially granted Yakunin's claims. The court ordered [Novaya Gazeta] to refute information published in the article 'Milliardy Cherpali Polkovnikom' and delete the material itself," court spokesperson Yunona Tsaryova told Interfax on Wednesday.

The court additionally recovered 30,000 rubles from Novaya Gazeta and 10,000 rubles from its journalist as compensation for moral injury, Tsaryova said.

Yakunin lodged the lawsuit for the information disseminated in the article contested by him to be recognized as false and for him to be awarded 5 million rubles as compensation from Novaya Gazeta and its journalists.

The court agreed with the plaintiff's stance that the contested information is not true and also has a defamatory nature.

At the same time, the court ruled that the amount of compensation demanded by the plaintiff is excessive.
