Trump statement on the Golan irresponsible, may destabilize situation in Middle East - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. March 22 (Interfax) - U.S. President Donald Trump's statement on the Golan Heights may lead to the aggravation and destabilization of the situation in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Friday.
"Unfortunately, yes," Zakharova said on the Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) TV channel in responding to a relevant question.
"Such statements, and not only that; numerous statements, which we believe are being made irresponsibly, may really have a negative effect [...] They may further destabilize the situation in the region," she said.
"The main purpose of the international community, in my opinion, was to achieve stability and take a solid path to peace, rather than the contrary: fueling new wars and aggravating existing conflicts," Zakharova said.
U.S. President Donald Trump said last Thursday that it is time for Washington to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
