New equipment enables Russian Tu-160, Tu-95MS bombers to use modern cruise missiles - Shoigu
MOSCOW. May 8 (Interfax) - The Russian strategic bombers Tupolev Tu-160 and Tu-95MS are being outfitted with new onboard equipment enabling them to use modern types of cruise missiles, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a conference call at the Defense Ministry on Wednesday.
"Item one [on the conference call agenda] concerns the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers. They are currently being outfitted with new onboard equipment enabling them to successfully use modern air-launched cruise missiles," he said.
The efficiency of this modernization "has been confirmed by positive results of test launches," he said.
Shoigu said the participants in the conference call would discuss the implementation of the president's directives to increase serviceability of Russia's strategic bombers.
