Ukrainian deputy PM questions lawfulness of Zelensky's decision to dissolve Rada

KYIV. May 20 (Interfax) - The constitutionality of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to dissolve the Verkhovna Rada may be open to question, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Pavlo Rozenko said.

"But there is an immediate question: who could [the Rada's dissolution] be beneficial and favorable to? I'm concerned about how beneficial and favorable this step is to the country's development [...] And there is also the question of how constitutional or unconstitutional this decision is," Rozenko told Interfax when asked how justifiable and appropriate early parliamentary elections might be in the current situation.

In commenting on Zelensky's proposal that the government should resign, Rozenko said this is fully within the purview of the parliament. "The government's fate is in the Verkhovna Rada's hands. In any shape and format, whether there are [resignation] letters or not. The decision rests with the Verkhovna Rada," he said.

Zelensky said earlier in the day that he was dissolving the 8th Verkhovna Rada and proposed that the government should resign.
