Kyiv expects Russia to promptly implement ITLOS ruling on Ukrainian sailors

KYIV. May 25 (Interfax) - Ukraine expects Russia to promptly implement the decision of the United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ordering the Russian Federation to release three Ukrainian vessels and 24 sailors detained near the Kerch Strait in November 2018 and allow them to return to Ukraine, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal said.

"We expect Russia to implement the Tribunal's order promptly and fully," Zerkal said on her Facebook page.

Ex-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, in turn, welcomed the ITLOS decision.

"I would like to thank the skilled team of Ukrainian diplomats who continue defending the true national interests in this difficult time. This decision is yet another red line for the Kremlin, as well as a confirmation that we choose a right strategy," Poroshenko said on Facebook on Saturday.
