INF Treaty suspension to enable Russia to resume development of such missiles - Volodin
MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - Russia will be able to resume the development of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles after suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty), Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said.
"We can't act in any other way, because otherwise the U.S., having withdrawn from this treaty, will step up [the development of] intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles and use them, but we won't be able to do so until we withdraw. Once this decision is approved, Russia has the opportunity to resume both research in this area and development of these missiles, understanding that we are no longer bound by any obligations," Volodin told journalists on Thursday.
