Moscow denounces toughening of U.S. sanctions on Cuba

MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - Russia denounces the toughening of the United States' sanctions on Cuba, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"We strongly denounce the toughening of the anti-Cuban embargo on the part of the United States of America," Zakharova said at a news briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

Russia is confident that "the tightening of the sanction noose around Havana primarily hits the interests of ordinary people by depriving them of fundamental rights and freedoms, which Washington seems to defend so eagerly," she said.

The U.S. announced earlier on Tuesday that it was toughening the rules of travel to Cuba for its citizens. In particular, the U.S. government banned its citizens from traveling there for education purposes, which was among the principal ways for U.S. citizens to legitimately visit Cuba. The U.S. additionally forbade its citizens to arrive in Cuba on board cruise vessels and yachts.
