Iranian diplomat thanks Russia for its stance on U.S. sanctions

MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax) - Iran values Russia's position and actions amid the United States sanctions on the two countries, Ali Asghar Khaji, a senior aide to the Iranian foreign minister for special political affairs, said on Monday.

"The relationship between our countries, particularly in the current conditions, under pressure from the United States and the illegal sanctions it has imposed on Russia and Iran, is of great significance," Asghar Khaji said during consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the Russian Federation for its position and actions that the Russian government is undertaking in response to the United States' unlawful actions," he said.

Iran views its relationship with Russia as "strategic," Asghar Khaji said.

Vershinin, in turn, highlighted the importance of consultations with Iran on relevant regional and international issues.

"We consider it very important that both we and the Iranian side are based on unconditional respect for and observance of fundamental principles of the UN Charter, the respect for sovereign and independent countries as parties to international relations, and in general on what concerns our view on the region: respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all countries and their ability to decide on and determine their future development on their own," Vershinin said.
