U.S. ambassador to Russia says Surkov-Volker meeting possible in near future

MOSCOW. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov and U.S. Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker may meet in the coming weeks, according to U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman.

The ambassador said in a program aired on Ekho Moskvy that he spoke with Volker after a series of meetings in Ukraine and urged him to visit Moscow for talks with Surkov and a number of other officials.

Hopefully, progress will be made at Ukraine peace talks, he said.

Huntsman described Volker and Surkov as remarkable diplomats and said he wished to see them meet in Moscow. A meeting might be arranged in the coming weeks, but there is no guarantee, considering the great complexity of the task, he said.

Center for Current Politics (CPC) Director Alexei Chesnakov said earlier that Washington had called for organizing a Surkov-Volker meeting.

Surkov and Volker have been discussing Donbas settlement issues since August 2017.
