Suspected spy Whelan to stay under arrest

MOSCOW. Nov 19 (Interfax) - The Moscow City Court upheld on Tuesday the extension of arrest of Paul Whelan, a citizen of the United States, Ireland, Canada, and the UK suspected by Russia of spying, until the end of December, an Interfax correspondent reported.

"The resolution of the Moscow Lefortovsky District Court is upheld, and the appeal is dismissed," the Moscow City Court said in its ruling.

The lawyers asked the Moscow City Court to overrule the order of the district court, which extended Whelan's arrest, and to choose a milder restrictive measure - house arrest or bail.

The court met in camera, since the Whelan case is classified.
