Kronshtadt, Velikiye Luki subs due to be commissioned in Nov 2021

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 2 7 (Interfax) - Two diesel subs of Project 677 Lada, the Kronshtadt and the Velikiye Luki, are due to be commissioned on November 25, 2021, according to Kremlin materials prepared for President Vladimir Putin's trip to St. Petersburg.

The Kronshtadt is ready 89%, and the Velikiye Luki is ready 55%, the materials said.

Submarines of Project 677 Lada were designed in the end of the 20th century. The keel of the lead submarine, the St. Petersburg, was laid in 1997, and the sub was delivered to the Navy in 2010. Construction of the Kronshtadt and the Velikiye Luki started in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Subs of Project 677 remain relevant, Russian Navy Commander Nikolai Yevmenov said in November.

According to the Kremlin materials, subs of Project 677 are built to fight submarines and surface ships, to protect naval bases, coast, and marine communication lines, and to deliver missile strikes on coastal sites of the enemy.

"A special feature of submarines of Project 677 is their mono-hull architecture; accessory equipment and electronic warfare systems were specially designed for this type of submarines by Russian enterprises," the materials said.
