HSE regrets Zhukov guilty verdict

MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The Higher School of Economics (HSE) regrets the conviction of its student Yegor Zhukov, whose political activism it does not support, but is glad that he will not be sent to prison.

"It was with regret that we learnt that Yegor Zhukov has been found guilty. At the same time, we are glad that our student will not have to spend this term in confinement," the HSE stated on its website on Friday.

The HSE does not support "Zhukov's activism political or otherwise," because the university's principle is to keep out of politics, it said.

The conviction has yet to come into effect, the HSE said.

"We hope that the lawfulness and justification of today's conviction will be checked by higher courts which will make a fair decision," the HSE said.
