Belarus to appoint its ambassador to U.S. soon - foreign minister

MINSK. Feb 4 (Interfax) - Belarus plans to appoint its ambassador to the United States in the near future, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said.

"We, for our part, may post our representative [ambassador] in the near future, within the next few months, because we have to comply with some protocol technical requirements," Makei told journalists in Minsk on Tuesday.

It was reported earlier that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Belarus on Saturday, the first time a U.S. secretary of state has visited the country in the previous 25 years. Speaking at a press conference, Pompeo emphasized the importance of posting a U.S. ambassador in Minsk.

The previous U.S. ambassador was expelled from Belarus in 2008.
