No stability in world, nor is it anticipated - Russian General Staff chief

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - Stabilization of the international situation is not anticipated as of yet, Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said.

"Amid the current international situation and all of its difficulties, when there is no stability, nor is it anticipated; for instance, the fight against international terrorism is intensifying both near the Russian border and in the Middle East - all of this necessitates meetings between top military officials and discussion of a number of issues," Gerasimov said at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Thursday.

The Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel broadcasted footage of the meeting.

"In this light, relations between Russia and Azerbaijan gladden me," Gerasimov said. "Our long-standing and good neighborly relations have a common history," he said.

A meeting between Gerasimov and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe Tod Wolters took place in Baku on Thursday.
