Nizhny Novgorod deputies commemorate Nemtsov with moment of silence

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Feb 27 (Interfax) - The Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region began its session on Thursday with a moment of silence to commemorate late opposition politician and former governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Boris Nemtsov, an Interfax correspondent reported.

The moment of silence was proposed by Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin. "It's right to commemorate him [Nemtsov] with a moment of silence," Nikitin said.

Thanks to efforts undertaken by Nemtsov in his capacity as governor, "Nizhny Novgorod fought to avoid the fate of an outsider city and evolved into a truly significant center of reform and a remarkable capital of new Russia's advancement," he said.

A portrait of Nemtsov will be installed on Nizhny Novgorod's Teatralnaya Square and flowers will be laid there on Thursday. A rally commemorating the murdered politician will take place in the city with the consent of local authorities on February 29.

Nemtsov served as governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region between 1991 and 1997.

He was murdered on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge in the vicinity of the Kremlin on February 27, 2015.
