Turkmenistan discussing creation of data centers with foreign companies

ASHGABAT. Nov 5 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan is holding preliminary talks with international companies on the creation of data centers for high-performance computing, Turkmen Deputy Energy Minister Serdar Saparov said.

"Preliminary negotiations are currently underway with international companies on the creation of modern data centers for high-performance computing," Saparov was quoted as saying by Turkmenportal.

Implementing such projects will make it possible to efficiently use surplus generated electricity, attract investment and develop the country's high-tech infrastructure, Saparov said. He recalled that the law on virtual assets has been in force in Turkmenistan since January 1, 2026.

Saparov noted that the Energy Ministry oversees 11 power plants with a total installed capacity of more than 6.5 GW. This fully covers the country's domestic needs and makes it possible to increase electricity exports. In addition, the country has completed a project to create a unified ring power system, which has improved the reliability of the electricity supply.

The industry is carrying out the modernization and digitalization of networks. The introduction of an automated commercial electricity metering system and smart meters using international experience is being considered.

Saparov also said that research into the country's wind resources is continuing with the support of the Asian Development Bank, and the results of this will help identify sites for future wind power plants. Turkmenistan is also introducing combined-cycle gas turbine units that make it possible to save natural gas and reduce the burden on the environment.
