Armenia's agricultural exports to EAEU could fall by 40% in case of membership suspension - report

MOSCOW. Oct 20 (Interfax) - Armenia's agricultural exports to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries could fall by 39.9% if its EAEU membership is suspended, alcohol exports would be halved, according to a report, entitled "On potential consequences of a suspension of the May 29, 2014 EAEU Agreement for Armenia," which was compiled by the Russian, Belarusian, Kazakh and Kyrgyz governments and published by the Russian government's press service.

In 2025, Armenia exported $439.6 million worth of agricultural products to the EAEU, the report said. A suspension of its EAEU membership would reduce that figure by 39.9% (or $175.3 million) to $264.3 million, the report said.

Exports of alcohol products could drop by 50.1% (or $192.4 million) to $191.5 million from $383.9 million in 2025, and of tobacco products, by 36.7% (or $19.2 million) to $33.1 million from $52.3 million, respectively, it said.

Armenia's agricultural imports from the EAEU could decrease by 27.2% (or $158.1 million) to $422.9 million from $581 million in 2025, the report said.

Another potential consequence is that the equivalence of veterinary and phytosanitary oversight systems could no longer be recognized, it said. In particular, this would make it necessary to re-certify all agricultural suppliers for compliance with EAEU standards and require a bilateral approval of veterinary and phytosanitary certificate forms applied to Armenia (for exports to EAEU member states). In addition, Armenian products would be subject to the same full-format sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary-sanitary control as are products from a third country (that is not a member of the EAEU).
