Moldovan president stands for unification with Romania, majority of population opposed

CHISINAU. Oct 8 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Maia Sandu advocates for unification with Romania but said that this would only be possible with the support of the Moldovan population majority.

She made this statement in a discussion at the 2026 Moldova Security Forum in Chisinau on Thursday.

"I believe that Moldova would have greater security with Romania. This discussion has been ongoing since the first day of independence. A significant portion of the population backs this idea," Sandu said.

At the same time, "unification is possible only if there is the will of the majority of the population," she said.

"The decision of the population majority is crucial. This is a fundamental principle as we respect the will of the majority. According to opinion polls, such a majority does not currently exist. However, there is a majority in favor of integration into the European Union, and we are working to that end. Although the EU is not a defense project, Moldova's integration into the EU would ensure greater security for us," Sandu said.

"Romania has always been helpful to us as we have important joint projects in the energy sector and other areas. Romania ranks first in imports of goods from Moldova and is our primary economic partner. Therefore, whatever happens in Romania affects us as well," she said.

As previously reported, alongside Moldovan citizenship, Sandu also holds Romanian citizenship.
