Projects worth $933 mln for generating electricity from waste to be carried out in Uzbekistan by 2028

TASHKENT. Sept 11 (Interfax) - The implementation of six investment projects totaling $933 million for producing electricity based on waste incineration are to be carried out in Uzbekistan in 2026-2027, and another five projects worth $625 million are under consideration, according to a statement on the presidential website.

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reviewed a presentation of investment projects to improve the waste management system, their processing and electricity production.

"The projects are being implemented in cooperation with Chinese companies. As of September 1, $286.8 million of investments have been utilized," the statement said.

The investment projects will be implemented in the Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Tashkent, Andijan, Fergana and Namangan regions. The plants in the Kashkadarya and Samarkand regions will be commissioned in 2026, and in the remaining regions in 2027.

After full launch, these enterprises will process 3.6 million tonnes of municipal solid waste and produce 1.6 billion kWh of electricity per year.

At the same time, opportunities will expand for a phased transition to the zero waste principle, reducing the burden on landfills and improving the environmental situation, the statement said.

The presentation also featured five more promising investment projects by companies from Singapore, South Korea and China for producing electricity from waste. The total cost of these projects is $625 million, and they are expected to be implemented in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Jizzakh, Surkhandarya, Bukhara and Khorezm regions. As a result, it will become possible to annually process 1.9 million tonnes of municipal solid waste and produce 635 million kWh of electricity. A total of 500 jobs will be created, 158 million cubic meters of natural gas will be saved, and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 316,000 tonnes.

Projects totaling $1.56 billion will therefore be implemented in Uzbekistan together with foreign investors.

Mirziyoyev emphasized the need to pay special attention to accelerating construction of these facilities, creating the necessary infrastructure and organizational conditions for investors, increasing the level of localization, and training qualified personnel in this field.
