Uzbekistan discovers gas condensate field in southern area, well testing underway - Energy Ministry

TASHKENT. Sept 7 (Interfax) - Uzbekistan has discovered a new gas condensate field in the Qashqadaryo Region in the southern area of the country, the country's Energy Ministry said in a statement.

"A new gas condensate field, Patron, has been discovered in the Mirishkor District of the Qashqadaryo Region. It is relatively small, with preliminarily estimated reserves totaling approximately 2.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas," the ministry said.

Uzbekistan connected the field to the gas transmission system on September 2.

The ministry notes that the discovery occurred during the drilling of an exploratory well. Drilling operations at exploratory well No. 1 at the field began based on the results of 3D seismic surveys conducted in 2025 by China's BGP.

"Drilling operations have been completed at the well, and commercial quantities of natural gas have been obtained resulting from reservoir productivity testing at a depth of 3,296-3,339 meters. The initial volume of gas produced from the well is 500,000 cubic meters per day," the ministry noted.

The Energy Ministry has issued a press release in response to videos circulating on social media claiming that there was a gas explosion in the Karshi District of the Qashqadaryo Region.

"False information has been circulating on some social media about a gas explosion. We inform that the information is false. The situation in the video circulating on social media actually depicts the testing and commissioning of an exploratory well at the new Patron gas condensate field," according to the press release.

The ministry notes that flaring gas through a special device during testing of a new well is a routine technological procedure to determine productivity, pressure, and operating parameters of the well.

"Therefore, interpreting the flaring process depicted in the video as an explosion or accident is unfounded," the ministry emphasizes.

The Energy Ministry notes that specialists from JSC UzLITIneftgaz are currently conducting gas-dynamic and gas condensate studies to determine the actual gas production rates from the well.
