Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan discuss increasing transit of Kazakh oil

BAKU. Sept 4 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have discussed increasing transit of Kazakh oil through Azerbaijan, the Kazakh Embassy in Baku said.

Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov and Kazakh Ambassador to Baku Alim Bayel reviewed the implementation of joint projects and initiatives, including the construction of a shared intermodal terminal at the Alat port and the expansion of transit routes for Kazakh energy carriers across Azerbaijan, the embassy said.

Sharifov has been appointed co-chairman of the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.

"The sides discussed the current state and prospects for developing cooperation in trade, economic, transport, logistics, investment, and other areas. In particular, they addressed the construction of a joint intermodal terminal at the Alat port, the supply of Kazakh locomotives and railcars to Azerbaijan, the building of vessels at the Baku Shipyard for Kazakhstan's needs, the further development of the joint Baku Grain Terminal at the Govsan port, increasing the transit of Kazakh energy carriers through Azerbaijan, and other relevant issues," the embassy said.

Special attention was paid to joint projects and strengthening economic and industrial cooperation through a joint investment fund established in 2024. The sides emphasized that organizing collaborative production would also help boost bilateral trade.

Some Kazakh oil currently transits Azerbaijan to world markets via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. Kazakhstan exported 1.2 million tonnes of oil through the pipeline in 2025. Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have an agreement to increase oil deliveries along this route to 2.2 million tonnes annually.

Kazakhstan has previously said it views the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Supsa, and Caspian transit routes through Azerbaijan as alternative export options amid instability in operations of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium.
