London intends to broaden energy, defense cooperation with Azerbaijan - new UK ambassador
BAKU. Aug 18 (Interfax) - London is keen on establishing a dynamic partnership with Baku in a variety of areas, the United Kingdom's new Ambassador to Azerbaijan Duncan Norman said while handing his credentials to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, according to a statement on the latter's website said.
"Stating that work on a new strategic partnership between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan is ongoing, the ambassador emphasized that this would further advance the achievements of the two countries through deeper cooperation, strengthening security, and promoting innovation across shared priorities. The ambassador expressed his country's desire to build a dynamic partnership with Azerbaijan in the fields of renewable energy, defense, and aviation, while highlighting educational ties and stronger connections between young people," the statement said.
The UK government appreciates Aliyev's efforts to establish peace between his country and Armenia and supports this progress, the ambassador said.
The UK was the first international partner to support Azerbaijani efforts to demine the de-occupied territories, he said.
Issues on the agenda are of great importance not only bilaterally, but also from the standpoint of regional development and cooperation, the president said.
Azerbaijan needs closer international cooperation on demining, he said, thanking the UK government for assistance in this area.
"Recalling that Azerbaijan-UK cooperation began precisely in the energy sector 30 years ago, President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the significant potential for partnership in renewable energy. In this context, he noted that the first solar power plant in Azerbaijan's liberated territories was constructed by BP," the statement said.
Of the 35 years of its independence, only one was peaceful in Azerbaijan, Aliyev said, underscoring a big change for the region.
Given the regional situation, security will remain a priority on the agenda, he said. Azerbaijan has created a favorable investment climate, he said, noting the strong mutual interest from Azerbaijani and UK companies.
