Azerbaijan begins constructing 300 MW thermal power plant in Nakhchivan

BAKU. Aug 12 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan has begun constructing a 300 MW thermal power plant (TPP) in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"The foundation of a thermal power plant with a capacity of 300 megawatts was laid [on August 11]. I should note that today the generating capacity of Nakhchivan is about 200 megawatts. Naturally, this plant has two goals: first, providing the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic [NAR] with constant energy, and second, export issues," Aliyev said in an interview with the Azerbaijani state TV channel AzTV.

The construction of the TPP will be part of the project to create the Nakhchivan Industrial Park, the foundation of which was also laid this past Tuesday, Aliyev said.

Many hydro and solar power plants, as well as a modular-type power plant, have already been built in the NAR, he said. Currently, private investors are building two solar power plants with a total capacity of 50 MW. In addition, it is planned that a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of just over 15 MW will be built in the Ordubad district.
