Russian technologies for coal-fired power generation planned for presentation in Oct - Yakutsk region governor

YAKUTSK. July 28 (Interfax) - The first decisions on developing domestic coal-fired power generation technologies are planned for presentation this autumn, the government press service of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) quoted regional Governor and Chairman of the Russian State Council Commission on Energy Aisen Nikolayev as saying.

"Developing domestic technologies for coal-fired power generation is a priority. We plan to present the first results of our joint work and discuss further steps to develop domestic technologies for coal-fired power generation during Russian Energy Week in October," Nikolayev said at a meeting of the State Council commission's working group.

Nikolayev added that the respective parties discussed coal-fired power generation during a recent meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting participants also discussed drafting technical specifications for developing domestic energy equipment, proposals for drawing up preliminary feasibility studies for projects, and the progress of generating companies in the area.

The participants paid particular attention to improving the environmental efficiency of coal-fired generation. Nikolayev noted that it is necessary to ensure a balance between economic efficiency and compliance with current environmental requirements when developing new technologies.

As reported, Putin in autumn of 2025 proposed considering expanding coal-fired power generation in Russia's Far East.

"The region has substantial coal reserves. Therefore, I believe that it would be appropriate to evaluate the potential for expanding coal-fired power generation in the Far East. Naturally, this should be done where it is economically substantiated and feasible," Putin said at a meeting on developing the region's fuel and energy sector.
