AzerGold begins development of limestone, sand-gravel deposits
BAKU. May 27 (Interfax) - CJSC AzerGold has commenced activities for the development of non-metallic mineral deposits, the company said.
In connection with "the transfer of several limestone and sand-gravel deposits located in the Garadagh district of Baku city, as well as in Absheron, Zagatala, Balakan, Oghuz, and Imishli districts to the use of CJSC AzerGold, a dedicated Task Force established within the company has commenced its activities. At the same time, work has begun on establishing the relevant organizational structure," AzerGold said in a statement.
AzerGold has already conducted preliminary analyses of the technical accessibility of the sites, infrastructure, logistics, terrain, environmental conditions and raw material reserves.
"It was decided to conduct a phased analysis of historical and geological data and start exploration work to clarify the raw material reserve base of the areas and assess the efficiency of the existing fields for exploitation. Geological research work has already begun in accordance with the prepared exploration program for the 'Guzdek Mulda' located in the Garadagh district and Absheron district of Baku. It is planned to start relevant work on the Imishli field from June [all in the central part of Azerbaijan]," the company said.
The development of sand-gravel deposits in the northwestern regions (Katekhchay I and II in the Zagatala district, Balakanchay I and II in the Balakan district and Aghchay I in the Oghuz district) has been postponed to the next stage, it said. The company attributed this to distance from sales markets (particularly Baku), limited infrastructure capabilities, terrain features, as well as logistical and transportation costs and the risk of economic inefficiency at the current stage.
"As a state-owned company, CJSC AzerGold prioritizes profitability and efficiency in its operations, making this issue of particular importance," it said.
It is also noted that the company together with Boston Consulting Group analyzed more than 70 deposits in various economic regions of the country in 2025. As a result, proposals for improving institutional management and the industry's regulatory framework were submitted to the Azerbaijani government.
CJSC AzerGold was established by a decree of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on February 11, 2015. It is engaged in the study, research, exploration, development and management of gold-bearing and iron ore deposits.
