Agreements on main parameters of building 1st NPP in Kazakhstan to be signed during Putin's visit to Astana - Ushakov

MOSCOW. May 26 (Interfax) - Russia and Kazakhstan will sign important agreements on main parameters of the construction in Kazakhstan of its first nuclear power plant (NPP) during Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Astana, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said.

"I would like to note the flagship project in the peaceful atom sector, the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan with the Rosatom state-owned corporation's participation using Russia's most advanced technologies. Important agreements on main parameters of the NPP's construction and on the project's funding through a Russian state export loan will be signed as part of the visit," Ushakov told reporters ahead of Putin's visit to Kazakhstan.

It was reported earlier that the construction of this NPP would take approximately 11 years and may be completed in 2035-2036. Prospecting began near the Ulken village on the Lake Balkhash on August 8, 2025. The NPP will be called Balkhash.

Putin will pay a state visit to Kazakhstan on May 27-29. He will also participate in a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council during the visit.
