Tajikistan, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank discuss implementing second stage to upgrade Nurek HPP

DUSHANBE. May 25 (Interfax) - Tajikistan's Energy and Water Resources Minister Daler Juma met with a delegation from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Dushanbe, the ministry's press center reported.

The parties discussed developing bilateral collaboration in the energy sector, as well as implementing key infrastructure projects.

The parties paid particular attention to the modernization of the Nurek Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the largest in Central Asia, which includes upgrading the plant's generating capacity and infrastructure.

The project to modernize the Nurek HPP is being implemented in stages with the support of international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the AIIB. The second phase of the project includes upgrading the remaining six hydroelectric units, renovating key plant facilities, and improving operational reliability and safety. The plant's installed capacity should increase to over 3.2 GW upon completion.

The Nurek HPP is Tajikistan's largest energy facility and accounts for a significant portion of the country's electricity generation. World Bank data indicate that the plant meets approximately 50% of domestic electricity demand and plays a key role in the region's electricity exports.
