China's Hunan Junxin to implement waste-to-energy generation project in Kazakhstan in two years valued at $308 mln

ASTANA. May 21 (Interfax) - China's Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection Co., Ltd plans to build a waste processing plant and a 60 MW power station in Almaty within two years, which will use waste as fuel.

Construction of the waste processing plant will begin on May 29, the Kazakh government's press service said following a meeting between Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and Dai Daoguo, the chairman of Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection Co.

The project, valued at 145.5 billion tenge (more than $308 million at the current exchange rate), involves processing solid household waste with subsequent electricity generation. The facility will be able to process up to 2,000 tonnes of waste per day.

The project also provides for the creation of three centers (for power supply, digital solutions and heat supply), as well as production and educational platforms for localizing technology and training personnel.

As reported, on August 29, 2025, Kazakh Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev signed an investment agreement for the project with Junxin Environmental Protection (Almaty) LLP, a subsidiary of Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection.

Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection is a private Chinese company founded in 2011, specializing in environmentally friendly solutions for solid waste management, including thermal processing, electricity generation and resource reuse.

The official exchange rate on May 21 is 471.77 tenge/$1.
