Georgia extends gas supply contract with Azerbaijan for 20 years

TBILISI. May 18 (Interfax) - Georgia and Azerbaijan have signed a package of agreements in the energy and transport sectors during a meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Monday.

"The parties signed a number of agreements in the energy and transport sectors following the meeting. These include a 20-year intergovernmental agreement on electricity supplies and transit between Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as a 20-year extension of the gas sale and purchase agreement that has been in effect since 2003, which includes guarantees of gas supply security for the population," according to the Georgian government press release.

The respective parties during the meeting also signed a protocol of the bilateral coordination council, which envisages the full commissioning of the new section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.

Furthermore, an agreement was reached to resume daily passenger train service between Tbilisi and Baku, effective as of May 26 of this year, after a six-year hiatus.

Georgia imported 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan in 2025, accounting for around 70% of Georgia's gas consumption.
